Bengaluru: A 29-year-old software engineer was found dead at her residence in JP Nagar, with police registering a case of alleged dowry harassment against her husband and his family. The incident has once again brought focus on the persistence of dowry related abuse despite strict legal provisions.
The deceased, identified as Bhuvaneshwari, was originally from Needamangalam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur district. She had been living in Bengaluru with her husband, Harish Kumar, at an apartment complex in JP Nagar 8th Phase.
Allegations of harassment over dowry
According to the complaint filed by her father, Anbalagan, Bhuvaneshwari had been facing prolonged mental and physical harassment over dowry demands following her marriage four years ago.
The family alleged that around Rs 25 lakh was spent on the marriage, including approximately Rs 3 lakh worth of gold. Despite this, demands for additional money reportedly continued, leading to frequent disputes.
Police officials said that based on the complaint, a case has been registered under provisions related to dowry harassment, and an investigation is currently underway.
Strained relationship and separation
Investigators said that the couple had been facing marital issues in recent months. Harish Kumar had reportedly moved back to Tamil Nadu, while Bhuvaneshwari stayed in Bengaluru with her parents and their one-year-old child.
Family members alleged that Kumar had been pressuring her for a divorce and had distanced himself from the family. They also claimed that he did not visit even when their child was unwell, further worsening the situation.
Incident came to light after no response
The incident came to light after a friend’s repeated attempts to contact Bhuvaneshwari went unanswered. Concerned, the friend alerted her family.
When her mother reached the residence, the room was found locked from inside. Bhuvaneshwari was later discovered unresponsive, and authorities were informed.
Police confirmed that further procedures, including post-mortem examination, are being carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
Case registered, probe underway
The Karnataka Police have booked Harish Kumar, his mother Kartigaivalli, and brother Rakesh Kumar in connection with the case. The complaint has been registered at the Thalaghattapura police station.
Officials said statements from family members and other witnesses are being recorded, and all aspects of the allegations are being examined.
Dowry harassment remains a concern
Despite legal prohibitions under the Dowry Prohibition Act and related laws, cases of dowry harassment continue to be reported across the country. Experts note that social pressure, financial expectations and lack of timely intervention often contribute to such incidents.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of reporting harassment early and seeking legal and psychological support.
Conclusion
The tragic death has raised serious concerns about domestic harassment and the need for stronger awareness and enforcement of laws. As the investigation progresses, officials have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
