Bengaluru is poised for a major overhaul as authorities plan to reorganize it into five separate municipal corporations under the proposed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), Deccan Herald reported. Currently administered by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city will see BBMP dissolved once GBA is fully operational.

The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill seeks to stretch the city’s official borders by including nearby villages, peri-urban zones, and towns within Bengaluru’s jurisdiction. This decision emerged after a high-level discussion at Vidhana Soudha, headed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Officials cited improved governance, anticipated revenue expansion, and alignment with assembly constituencies as reasons for this reorganization.

Central areas like Shivaji Nagar, Gandhinagar, Chickpet, Chamarajpet, Pulakeshi Nagar, and Shanti Nagar could form a dedicated “Central Bengaluru” corporation. The rest will be split into four zones—North, South, East, and West—covering suburban belts. Due to their vast size, constituencies such as RR Nagar, Mahadevapura, Yeshwantpur, and KR Puram may end up divided among different corporations.

Shivakumar clarified that the new divisions would initially stay within BBMP’s boundaries, with rural panchayat regions incorporated gradually. He mentioned the Brand Bengaluru committee’s recommendations would soon be shared with opposition parties to build consensus before civic elections.

This move follows the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, which replaced the BBMP Act. The law requires creating the GBA and allows up to seven corporations, with draft boundaries and cabinet approvals expected shortly. Final notifications will be issued by August 25 after public feedback.
