In a Bengaluru facility, medical care is provided to a surprising group of patients — pigeons. The Shree Shankeshwar Paraswanth Jain Kabootar Dana Seva Samiti in Rajajinagar has treated over one lakh pigeons in the last three years. At any given time, the centre cares for around 1,000 pigeons, with about 60 new arrivals daily, most of which are injured.

Founder Vasanthraj Ranka explained that the pigeons often suffer from injuries caused by balcony nets, electrocution, vehicle collisions, or fights with each other. The scorching heat has intensified cases of dehydration, which leaves the birds weak and lethargic, requiring an extended recovery period. Some pigeons also suffer from facial paralysis or PMV1, a deadly virus that affects their ability to fly or walk.

The centre, established eight years ago, spans 1,000 square feet and is equipped with modern tools, including an oxygen machine. Once the pigeons recover, they are released into the open spaces of Cubbon Park.

Naresh Ranka, Vasanthraj’s son and a volunteer, highlighted the community’s support, sharing stories of people from diverse walks of life bringing injured pigeons to the facility.

For those who find injured pigeons, the centre recommends placing the bird in a cardboard box and contacting the facility at 9845221309 for assistance.
