In a swift breakthrough, city police have arrested two men for allegedly stealing ₹91.76 lakh from a private firm on BEL Road. The accused include a cashier employed at the firm and his associate, officials confirmed on Friday.
Inside job unearthed
According to police, the theft occurred on the night of February 19. The firm’s owner had locked the office and left for the day. The following morning, he was alerted by a neighbouring shopkeeper that the office glass had been shattered.
Upon inspection, ₹91.76 lakh was found missing from ₹1.76 crore kept in a drawer inside the office. A complaint was lodged at the Sadashivanagar Police Station on February 20.
Investigations led to the arrest of Dhananjay, a resident of RT Nagar who worked as a cashier at the firm, and his friend Praveen from Malavagoppa in Shivamogga district.
Arrest in Shivamogga, cash recovered
Praveen was secured in Shivamogga along with the car allegedly used in the crime. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed and revealed the involvement of the insider.
Police subsequently detained Dhananjay, who is said to have admitted that he tipped off his friends about the large sum of cash stored at the office, allegedly with the intention of making “easy money”.
Officials stated that ₹81.66 lakh in cash has been recovered so far.
Hunt on for absconding accused
Police are continuing efforts to trace two other accused believed to be involved in the case. Further investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events and determine whether any additional persons were complicit.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of secure cash handling practices for businesses, particularly when large sums are stored on premises.
