Residents of Bengaluru are advised to brace for a major Cauvery water supply disruption lasting up to 24 hours, beginning early on February 5, as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) undertakes essential maintenance on the city’s primary drinking water network

The shutdown will affect large parts of south and central Bengaluru, where households and commercial establishments depend heavily on Cauvery water. BWSSB officials have cautioned that several areas may receive no water or experience very low pressure during this period.

Why the water supply is being stopped

According to BWSSB Chairperson V. Ram Prasath Manohar, the shutdown is required to carry out critical pipeline-linking work involving 1,200 mm and 700 mm diameter pipelines under Stage I and Stage II of the Cauvery Water Supply Project.

Officials said the work cannot be safely executed while the system is operational at full pressure. Temporarily halting pumping is necessary to ensure worker safety and prevent damage to the network. The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen Bengaluru’s water distribution system and improve long-term reliability.

Areas likely to be affected

Several localities in south and central Bengaluru are expected to face disruption, including parts of Jayanagar, Banashankari, JP Nagar, Kumaraswamy Layout, Uttarahalli, Koramangala, Madiwala, Adugodi, Wilson Garden, Shantinagar, Domlur, Richmond Town, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

BWSSB has indicated that water supply will either be fully stopped or significantly restricted across these areas during the shutdown period.

Advisory for residents

The water board has urged residents to store adequate drinking and domestic water in advance, avoid wastage, and cooperate with field staff. Water supply will be restored gradually once pumping resumes after the maintenance work is completed.
