Mandya: In a tragic incident on Friday, two students from a Bengaluru-based college drowned in the River Cauvery near Edamuri Falls in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district.

Victims identified

The deceased were identified as William Shyam (21) and Venkatesh (21), both pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. Police said the duo, along with five other college mates, had visited the river spot for a picnic when the mishap occurred.

Rescue operation

Personnel from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, led by officer Ambarish Uppar, launched a rescue operation and managed to recover the bodies from the river.

Case registered

The KRS police have registered a case in connection with the incident. After post-mortem examinations, the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families.

Safety concerns

Locals pointed out that certain stretches of the Cauvery near Srirangapatna are known for their strong undercurrents, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities have often issued warnings urging visitors to exercise caution in these areas.
