Bengaluru: A family dispute over marriage and financial demands allegedly turned violent after a man stabbed his daughter, an assistant professor, inside a private college in Bengaluru. The victim, Lakshmi Durga, sustained serious injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment, while her father, Nagendra, has been arrested by the police.

The incident occurred on July 25 and is being investigated as an alleged attempt to murder arising out of prolonged domestic disagreements.

Attack inside college campus

According to police, the incident took place at around 3 pm when Nagendra arrived at the private college where his daughter was employed as an assistant professor.

Police said he informed the college staff that he wished to meet Lakshmi Durga and was allowed to enter the Head of Department’s chamber, where she was present.

Investigators alleged that shortly after entering the room, Nagendra attacked his daughter with a knife, stabbing her multiple times in the abdomen, chest and neck before fleeing from the campus.

College staff and others rushed to assist the injured woman, who was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said she remains under medical care.

Police cite family dispute as motive

According to the preliminary investigation, the alleged attack stemmed from a long-running family dispute.

Police said Nagendra, who works as a cab driver, had been searching for a suitable groom for his daughter.

Investigators alleged that after a prospective groom’s family agreed to the marriage proposal, Nagendra demanded Rs 40 lakh from them, claiming that he had spent a substantial amount on his daughter’s education and career.

Police further alleged that he insisted his daughter’s monthly salary should be handed over to him after the marriage.

Repeated disagreements within family

According to police, Lakshmi Durga and her mother objected to the financial demands allegedly made by Nagendra.

The objections reportedly led to frequent disputes within the family, resulting in strained relations over an extended period.

Investigators believe these disagreements ultimately culminated in the alleged attack at the college.

Accused arrested

Following the incident, police registered a case and launched a search for the accused.

Nagendra was subsequently arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Police are continuing their investigation to establish the sequence of events and gather further evidence in the case.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the charges at this stage.

Investigation continues

Police are recording statements from college staff, family members and other witnesses as part of the investigation.

They are also examining evidence collected from the scene to determine the circumstances leading to the attack.

The condition of Lakshmi Durga continues to be monitored as she receives treatment for her injuries.
