A tragic case of suspected food poisoning led to the death of a five-year-old boy, Dhiraj, from Bengaluru on Monday. His parents, Balaraj, a Swiggy delivery partner, and Nagalakshmi, have been hospitalized and are currently receiving treatment.
The family, residing in Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in Bengaluru West, reportedly consumed stale food, which is believed to have caused the poisoning. The K P Agrahara police have not yet filed an official case as both parents remain under medical care.
Initial investigations suggest that the family ate spoiled food, potentially leading to the poisoning. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), S Girish, stated, “We suspect food poisoning and will be sending the remaining food for testing to confirm.”
According to police sources, the family consumed leftover food on Sunday night, including a cake brought home by Balaraj, which had been a canceled order from three days earlier. The cake had been stored in their refrigerator.
A doctor from KIMS Hospital, where the family was admitted, confirmed that food poisoning was likely but added that the specific item responsible is still being determined. The family sought medical help on Monday morning after experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea.
Swiggy released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident, assuring full cooperation with the investigation. “Food safety is paramount to us, and all listed restaurants are required to possess FSSAI certification,” the statement read.
