As the festive season gains momentum, prices of flowers and fruits have surged sharply, with vendors anticipating further increases before Varamahalakshmi festival on Friday.
At KR Market’s wholesale section, chrysanthemums and roses, which usually cost Rs 180–200/kg, are now being sold at Rs 300–400/kg. Jasmine has seen the steepest rise, reaching Rs 500–600/kg, with retail rates going even higher.
“These hikes are common during festivals, but Varamahalakshmi always sees peak prices. We expect another jump in the next two days,” said GM Diwakar, member of the KR Market Flower Merchants’ Association.
Fruits are also witnessing a significant surge. The yelakki banana is currently priced at Rs 120–160/kg, while apples and pomegranates have crossed Rs 250/kg, with potential to touch Rs 300–350/kg, said vendor Rathnamma. Mosambi is also climbing, ranging between Rs 100–150/kg.
Traders attribute the soaring costs to heavy rainfall, which has disrupted crops and supply chains. “Overcast conditions affect transport and shelf life, pushing prices upward,” explained Range Gowda, a flower vendor.
Retailers are also feeling the strain. “We’ve had limited stock and consistently high prices for a week now. Another spike is likely,” said Syed Pasha, a vendor in Malleswaram.
Following Varamahalakshmi, prices could remain elevated with Krishna Janmashtami and Gowri-Ganesha festivals lined up this month.
