In a disturbing family theft case, Banaswadi Police have detained a minor boy for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth nearly ₹5 lakh from his grandparents’ residence in Bengaluru.
Police said ornaments weighing around 200 grams were reported stolen from the home of an elderly couple in Eerappa Reddy Layout. The complaint was filed by the 82-year-old grandfather after valuables kept inside a cupboard went missing.
Theft suspected after house visit
According to investigators, suspicion fell on the complainant’s grandson and one of his friends, who had visited the house around the time of the incident.
The elderly couple had reportedly stepped out for a medical appointment. When they returned, the boys were gone. Soon after, they noticed several ornaments missing, including chains, bangles, earrings and rings collected over many years.
Minor already linked to another case
During the probe, police found that the juvenile had already been detained by Lingadahalli Police in connection with another theft case in Chikkamagaluru district.
He had been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. Later, Banaswadi police obtained a body warrant to question him in the Bengaluru case.
Gold sold, partial recovery made
During questioning, the boy allegedly confessed to stealing the jewellery and selling part of it at a shop in Mysuru.
Police said only around 35 grams of the stolen gold has been recovered so far. Officials added that the money was allegedly spent on personal expenses and leisure activities.
