A recent rise in robberies targeting jewellery shops in Nelamangala and Madanayakanahalli has triggered concern among traders, residents and business owners, with many calling for stronger security measures and increased police presence.
The latest incident occurred at Mahalakshmi Jewellers and Bankers in T Begur village near Nelamangala, where three armed men allegedly entered the shop, threatened staff at knifepoint and escaped with gold ornaments worth around Rs 5 lakh.
Daylight robbery sparks fresh fears
According to police, the suspects assaulted an employee who attempted to chase them after the robbery. The broad daylight incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of jewellery shops located along major roads and highway corridors on Bengaluru’s outskirts.
Local traders said such crimes are becoming increasingly frequent in Nelamangala, Madanayakanahalli and surrounding areas, creating fear among business owners and employees.
Highway access aids criminals
Police officials believe many such robberies are carried out by organised gangs that carefully plan their operations. These groups reportedly conduct reconnaissance before striking and take advantage of quick access to highways, allowing them to flee before police can respond.
Authorities also pointed to inadequate CCTV coverage, limited surveillance in some localities and sparse patrolling as factors contributing to these crimes.
“Many offenders study escape routes in advance and use motorcycles, helmets and masks to conceal their identities,” a police officer said.
Traders seek stronger security measures
Following the latest robbery, traders have renewed demands for enhanced police patrolling, improved street lighting and the installation of additional CCTV cameras at strategic locations.
Business owners also urged authorities to strengthen vehicle checks along highways and commercial stretches to deter criminal activity.
Police have assured traders that efforts are underway to trace the suspects and increase patrols in vulnerable areas during business hours.
