The Social and Educational Survey, popularly known as the caste census, will begin across Karnataka on Monday, September 22. The large-scale exercise aims to collect data on the social, economic, and educational status of communities in the state.

However, officials indicated that the rollout in Greater Bengaluru could face slight delays due to ongoing training sessions for enumerators and pending logistical preparations.

The survey, first proposed to provide a clearer picture of caste-wise demographics and socio-economic conditions, is expected to play a key role in shaping the state’s welfare policies and reservation framework.

Government sources said that while most districts are ready to begin, the complexity of urban enumeration in Bengaluru has pushed back the timeline by a few days.

The last such exercise in Karnataka, conducted in 2015, had sparked political debates but also provided insights into community-level disparities.

The present survey will be supervised by the state’s Backward Classes Welfare Department with support from local administrations. Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with field staff during data collection.
