Bengaluru: On August 24, 2025, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways, V Somanna, formally requested Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to rename Tumkur University in honour of the late seer, His Holiness Sri Sri Shivakumara Mahaswamy of Siddaganga Mutt. In his letter, Somanna highlighted the seer’s lifelong contributions to society—providing free education, accommodation, and community meals (Dasoha) to thousands across the state—and called renaming the university a fitting tribute to his noble legacy.

Significance Behind the Proposal

Somanna’s appeal underscores the seer’s profound impact on education and social welfare in Karnataka. By proposing that Tumkur University bear the seer’s name, he aimed to honour the memory of a spiritual leader who dedicated his life to uplifting underprivileged communities. The proposal has garnered attention for reinforcing Tumkur’s identity as a spiritual and educational hub rooted in the seer’s philanthropic vision.
