Bengaluru: A 42-year-old fruit vendor was arrested in Bengaluru after a woman recorded an alleged incident of sexual harassment and shared the video on social media, enabling police to identify and apprehend the accused.
Video leads police to accused
The accused, identified as Vijay Ragav, a resident of NRI Layout in Ramamurthy Nagar, was arrested after a 26-year-old woman, employed at a private firm, lodged a formal complaint with the police. An FIR has been registered, and the two-wheeler allegedly used by the accused has been seized.
According to the complaint, the woman was waiting for a cab near her paying guest accommodation in Ramamurthy Nagar when Vijay Ragav allegedly approached her on a scooter and made obscene remarks. The woman confronted him and began recording the interaction on her mobile phone.
Woman’s courage sparks swift action
Police said the accused allegedly continued making inappropriate comments and even offered the woman ₹10,000 in exchange for sexual favours before leaving the spot when she warned that she would contact the police.
The woman later shared the video on Instagram, urging authorities to identify the accused and take action. The clip quickly went viral, prompting police to trace the suspect and arrest him.
Officials said the case highlights the importance of reporting incidents of harassment and using available evidence to assist investigations. Police have initiated further legal proceedings against the accused.
