A routine flight turned memorable for a passenger after a simple request for extra food led to an unexpected surprise mid-air.
Sony Singh, who was travelling with her toddler on a Delhi–Bengaluru flight, shared her experience on social media, calling it her “most unexpected flight moment”.
A simple request turns surprising
During the journey, she requested an extra meal for her child, as the food served had very few vegetables. A short while later, a flight attendant returned with another meal box.
However, upon opening it, she discovered it was labelled as a “captain’s meal”—a special meal usually reserved for the pilot.
What was in the meal?
The meal reportedly included spicy kachori and aloo sabzi. While grateful, she admitted feeling slightly embarrassed at receiving a meal meant for the cockpit crew.
As the food was too spicy for her toddler, she ended up eating it herself.
Why captain’s meals are different
In aviation, meals for pilots are typically prepared separately from passenger meals for safety reasons, ensuring that crew members do not consume the same food as passengers in case of contamination issues.
Internet reacts with humour
The story quickly gained attention online, with users sharing light-hearted reactions. Some joked about a pilot possibly missing their meal, while others, including cabin crew members, explained that such swaps can happen when specific meal options run out.
A small moment, a lasting memory
While unintended, the gesture highlighted the efforts of cabin crew to accommodate passengers, even if it meant going beyond standard procedures.
For Sony Singh, what began as a simple request turned into a unique in-flight experience—one she is unlikely to forget.
