Bengaluru (Karnataka): A shocking incident of assault on a food delivery executive has surfaced in Bengaluru, highlighting concerns about the safety of gig workers in the city. On 14 September, a Zomato delivery boy was allegedly attacked by two men in the Bapuji Nagar area after their food order was delayed.
Delivery delay sparks altercation
According to police sources, the altercation began when the food order arrived later than expected. The two accused, angered over the delay, allegedly confronted the delivery executive and physically assaulted him. Eyewitnesses reported that the delivery boy was verbally abused and then thrashed by the men before locals intervened.
Victim sustained minor injuries
The delivery youth reportedly suffered minor injuries in the scuffle. He is said to be recovering, and no serious medical complications have been reported. The police have stated that further action will depend on whether the delivery executive chooses to file a formal complaint against the accused.
Police awaiting official complaint
The Bapuji Nagar police confirmed awareness of the incident and indicated that an investigation will proceed once a complaint is officially lodged by the victim. “We can take necessary legal steps only after a formal complaint has been filed,” an officer was quoted as saying.
Gig workers’ safety under spotlight
This incident has reignited debate over the safety and working conditions of delivery executives who often face pressure from both customers and platforms to ensure speedy deliveries. Many delivery personnel have in the past raised concerns about harassment and abuse when orders are delayed due to traffic, weather, or restaurant preparation times—factors often beyond their control.
Conclusion
While the incident is under preliminary investigation, the case underscores the vulnerabilities faced by gig workers in urban centres like Bengaluru. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise patience and avoid violent confrontations in such situations. The police are expected to proceed with legal action once the victim comes forward with a formal complaint.
