In a bid to eradicate mosquitoes and combat diseases like malaria and filariasis, Ignatius Orwin Noronha from Kottara, Mangalore, has invented an affordable mosquito-catching machine called the Mozquit. Inspired by his mother’s suffering from filariasis, Orwin sought a solution to the mosquito menace.
The Mozquit, a chemical-free device, was inspired by the US-based Mosquito Magnet, which was prohibitively expensive at Rs 1.10 lakh and required Rs 5,000 monthly for maintenance. Determined to create a cost-effective alternative, Orwin developed a machine priced between Rs 1,250 and Rs 3,500, making it accessible to a wider audience.
The electrically operated Mozquit is made of plastic and integrates a food-grade powder during manufacturing. When connected to electricity, the internal motor rotates, emitting light that attracts mosquitoes. The motor’s fan then pulls the mosquitoes into a container where they are trapped. Dehydration and lack of food cause the mosquitoes to die within a short period.
National and international organizations have praised the Mozquit for its effectiveness in mosquito eradication. Despite its potential, an application to incorporate this device into the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme has not yet received a response.
