The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Friday issued a notice to e-commerce platform Amazon Seller Services Private Ltd following a complaint by a traders’ body that several food companies were selling “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad” online, which constituted fraud.

These foods are in violation of the Consumer Protection Act of 2019, according to an official statement. These provisions include the prohibitions on deceptive advertising and unfair business practices. Within a week, the e-commerce behemoth is expected to respond to the CCPA.

Ayodhya is getting ready for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Ram temple on January 22. This is why the CCPA took action. Preparing for the millions of devotees who will visit, the temple town is anticipated to experience an economic uplift.

The CCPA’s action has come amid Ayodhya’s preparations for the January 22 inauguration ceremony of the Ram temple by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The temple town is expected to get an economic boost as it gears up for millions of devotees who will visit it.

While the CCPA has targeted four food products, three contain the words ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’, while one of the snack brands did not use these wordings but advertises its ‘ladoos’ as a ‘memorable offering that can be taken to the deity in Ayodhya’. Even that is potentially liable for action, a senior official said.

“You cannot mislead in the headings,” declared Rohit Kumar Singh, Union secretary of consumer affairs and chief commissioner of the CCPA. The majority of people overlook the fine print.

Following HT’s review, the Confederation of All India Traders’ Praveen Khandelwal filed a written complaint to Union Minister of Consumer Affairs Piyush Goyal about “Amazon’s Unscrupulous Trade Practices in the name of Lord Ram.” This complaint prompted the CCPA to take action. The response from Amazon was not available at the time this report was submitted.

Singh from the CCPA stated that Amazon had only been asked to clarify the products—no fines had been imposed.
