China Expands South American Trade with Mega Port Project

In September, a delegation of Brazilian farmers and officials made their way to the Peruvian fishing town of Chancay, drawn by the prospect of a burgeoning Chinese mega-port emerging on the Pacific coast. With a commitment of $3.5 billion, this deep-water port is scheduled to commence operations later this year, promising to significantly enhance South America’s trade connections with China.

This ambitious infrastructure project serves as a direct gateway for China to access the resource-rich region. Over the past decade, Beijing has eclipsed the United States, becoming the foremost trade partner for South America and dominating the markets for soy, corn, and copper.
