New Delhi: Central government employees, who have been demanding raise in minimum pay under the 7th Pay Commission or 7th CPC, may receive big good news in coming days. If media reports are to be believed, the government may hike the minimum pay from Rs 18,000 to Rs 21,000 under the 7th Pay Commission. Sources in the Finance Ministry said National Anomaly Committee, formed to look into pay anomalies arising out of the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations, is likely to consider the demand of hike in minimum pay.

Central government employees have been demanding to raise minimum pay from Rs 18,000 to Rs 26,000 under the 7th Pay Commission. The National Anomaly Committee may recommend minimum pay at Rs 21,000 raising fitment factor 3.00 times from 2.57 times. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reportedly promised central government employees’ union leaders to consider to hike the minimum pay beyond Rs 18,000 under the 7th Pay Commission.

“The demands of central government employees over hiking minimum pay Rs 26,000, higher than the Rs 18,000 had approved by the cabinet on the 7th Pay Commission’s report, is likely not to be considered by the National Anomaly Committee on behalf of the government but they may agree to recommend the minimum pay Rs 21,000 with raising fitment factor 3.00 times from 2.57 times at the behest of the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley,” Finance Ministry sources were quoted as saying by Sen Times.

Earlier, a top leader of central government employees’ union expressed disappointment and said Arun Jaitley didn’t keep his words on minimum pay hike. Last month, Finance Ministry sources, however, said that there is no scope to change in minimum pay Rs 18,000, recommended by the 7th Pay Commission and approved by the cabinet.

The Union Cabinet approved the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission on pay hike and allowances on June 28 last year. The 7th Pay Commission had recommended a 14.27 per cent hike in basic pay the lowest in 70 years. The 7th Pay Commission had raised the minimum pay from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000 per month while the maximum pay has been hiked from Rs 80,000 to Rs 2.25 lakh per month and Rs 2.5 lakh for the cabinet secretary the senior-most civil servant.

Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday clarified that it has not fixed national minimum wage at Rs 18,000 per month. “Recently, some news reports have been published regarding the fixation of minimum wage as Rs. 18000/- per month by the Central Government. It is clarified that the Central Government has not fixed or mentioned any amount as “national minimum wage” in the Code on Wages Bill 2017. The apprehension that minimum wage of Rs. 18000/- per month has been fixed for all employees is, thus incorrect, false and baseless. The minimum wages will vary from place to place depending upon skill required, arduousness of the work assigned and geographical location,” read the statement released by the Labour and Employment Ministry.
