Chikkamagaluru district endured a week of heavy rainfall, leading to significant damage to public infrastructure. However, by Friday, the downpour had eased, bringing a sense of normalcy back to the region. The district recorded 19.5 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending Friday morning.
The Malnad taluks—Koppa, Sringeri, Mudigere, and Narasimharaja Pura—were among the hardest hit. The torrential rain damaged assets belonging to MESCOM and the Public Works Department (PWD), including electric poles, small bridges, and irrigation ponds. Officials stated that a detailed loss estimate is yet to be finalized.
A few houses in Kalasa, Mudigere, and Koppa taluks were also reported to be partially damaged. Despite the structural impact, there were no reported injuries or fatalities, bringing some relief to residents.
Landslides were observed in some areas, adding to the challenges. Nevertheless, the reduced rainfall has allowed local farmers to resume work. Coffee and areca growers have started spraying fungicides to protect their crops.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Kodagu district, the heavy rains prompted the closure of all schools and pre-university colleges on Saturday, as announced by the deputy commissioner.
