Mangaluru, October 16, 2025: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in collaboration with the Nursing Service Department and the Father Muller College of Nursing, joyfully celebrated the Feast of St Gerard Majella — the patron saint of pregnant women and postnatal mothers — on October 16, 2025, at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital Conference Hall.
The annual celebration served as a thanksgiving and a spiritual gathering, honouring the saint whose intercession has inspired faith, hope, and healing among mothers and families for generations.
Holy Mass and Prayer Service Mark the Beginning
The day began with a solemn Holy Mass at 7:45 a.m. in the hospital’s main chapel, celebrated by the Redemptorist Fathers. Following the Eucharistic celebration, a special gathering was held at 9:00 a.m., beginning with a prayer service led by III Year B.Sc. Nursing students, accompanied by a devotional reflection conducted by the nursing staff.
Dr Deepa Kanangal, Head of the Department of OBG, welcomed the gathering, sharing the significance of the feast. She noted that the event is held each year as an act of thanksgiving by Dr Gayathri Ramani, in gratitude for the miraculous blessing received through St Gerard’s intercession during her daughter’s challenging delivery.
Inauguration and Blessings
The formal inauguration was marked by the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Rev. Sr Dhanya Devasia, Principal, Father Muller College of Nursing, along with other dignitaries of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI).
Following this, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director, FMCI, garlanded the statue of St Gerard Majella, symbolising reverence and devotion.
Faith and Miracles Shared
In her address, Rev. Sr Dhanya Devasia shared a touching testimony, recounting her personal experience of St Gerard’s miraculous intercession during a critical childbirth case at Father Muller Hospital. She expressed deep gratitude for witnessing divine grace in action — a moment that saved both mother and child.
Presidential Address: The Divine Role of Motherhood
Delivering the Presidential Address, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo reflected on the spiritual significance of motherhood and the power of faith in the lives of expectant mothers.
“A mother is the first reflection of God’s love,” Fr Lobo said. “Through her care, affection, and sacrifice, she mirrors the compassion of the Divine.”
He encouraged mothers to trust in God’s providence and seek the intercession of St Gerard for safe and peaceful deliveries. He praised the OBG department and the nursing fraternity for their consistent commitment and service in organising this faith-filled event each year.
Fr Lobo’s reflection also touched hearts as he spoke about the emotional journey of motherhood — from the pain and anxiety of childbirth to the bittersweet moment a child first steps away from home. Drawing parallels from his own seminary experiences, he reminded the gathering that the bond between mother and child is sacred and eternal, strengthened by God’s grace through every trial.
Joyful Moments and Creative Presentations
The celebration also featured interactive games for expectant mothers, adding joy and laughter to the spiritual atmosphere. Prizes were distributed to the winners, recognising their participation and enthusiasm.
A short role play on the life of St Gerard Majella, presented by Third Year B.Sc. Nursing students, highlighted the saint’s humility, compassion, and deep faith, inspiring everyone present.
