Prince William to stand among world leaders at Pope Francis’ farewell
Kensington Palace has revealed that Prince William will attend the funeral of Pope Francis this Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. He will represent King Charles III and the British monarchy at the high-profile global ceremony, joining other heads of state such as US President Donald Trump, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Just a fortnight ago, King Charles and Queen Camilla had a deeply meaningful private audience with Pope Francis at Casa Santa Marta, where the Pope passed away on Monday. The meeting, held on the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary, was marked by warm exchanges and mutual well-wishes.
Their planned formal visit to the Vatican had been called off due to the Pope’s deteriorating health. Nevertheless, the royal couple had been praying for his healing, and in return, Pope Francis expressed concern for King Charles’ health as he continues to undergo cancer treatment.
This upcoming event marks another significant diplomatic moment for Prince William, who met President Trump in France last year. His father, King Charles—then the Prince of Wales—had previously delayed his own wedding to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
Following the Pope’s death, the King issued a statement describing the loss as “profound” and commended the pontiff’s empathy. Royal residences lowered flags, and the King wore a black tie in tribute during his audience with New Zealand’s prime minister.
