A 47-year-old woman, S. Prema, has been arrested in Chennai for allegedly orchestrating the theft of 80 sovereigns of jewelry from her relative’s home using her daughter.
The incident was reported by P. Thangadurai, a 52-year-old businessman residing on Apparsamy Street in Mylapore. On September 7, while preparing for the Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations, Thangadurai discovered that a significant amount of jewelry was missing from his locker.
After he lodged a complaint, the Mylapore police began their investigation. Notably, there were no signs of forced entry into the house, leading them to suspect frequent visitors. Their inquiries pointed towards Thangadurai’s nephew, Ajith, and his wife, Deepika, who often visited the family.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Deepika had stolen the jewelry on the instructions of her mother, Prema. The police subsequently recovered 75 sovereigns of the stolen jewelry from Prema’s residence in Velachery. She was arrested and remanded in judicial custody by a magistrate.
In a separate incident in Tiruttani, a gang broke into the home of an ex-army officer, stealing 100 sovereigns of jewelry, 1 kg of silver, and ₹70,000 in cash. The Podaturpet police are continuing their investigations into this burglary.
