The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Belagavi has announced a 24-hour withdrawal of non-essential medical services from 6 am on August 17, 2024, to 6 am on August 18, 2024, in response to the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata on August 9, 2024.
The protest aims to demand:
- Speedy Justice: For the murdered colleague.
- Safe Working Environment: For healthcare professionals.
- Strict Laws: To address such incidents decisively.
The protest comes after shocking reports of authorities mishandling evidence, and a recent attack on peaceful protesters by a flash mob, which further vandalized the crime scene and injured several doctors.
During the protest, emergency services will continue to function, but routine OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended.
