Bengaluru: Karnataka has received 1,122 additional medical seats along with a central grant of Rs 1,090 crore, giving a major boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state. The approval is expected to create more opportunities for students aspiring to pursue MBBS and postgraduate medical courses across multiple districts.

The announcement was made by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil during a press conference at Vidhana Soudha on May 16, 2026.

The minister said Karnataka continues to remain one of the leading states in India in the field of medical education. He added that the newly sanctioned seats would help students from districts such as Koppal, Gadag, Chamarajanagar, Karwar and Kaveri, among others.

Centre approves additional medical seats

According to the state government, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare granted final approval for the additional seats on May 15. The expansion includes both undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare education network.

Patil described the allocation as a record achievement, noting that receiving more than 1,000 additional seats in one phase reflects Karnataka’s strong performance in medical education and infrastructure development.

The state government believes the increase will improve access to quality medical education for students while also helping address the growing demand for healthcare professionals across India.

Rs 1,090 crore financial support announced

Alongside the seat expansion, the Centre has approved a financial package worth Rs 1,090 crore for Karnataka’s medical education sector.

Out of the total amount, Rs 495 crore has been sanctioned for undergraduate medical education, while Rs 541 crore has been allocated for postgraduate medical programmes. The remaining support will be utilised for infrastructure strengthening and institutional development.

The funding is expected to help medical colleges improve classrooms, laboratories, hospital facilities, hostels and training infrastructure required for accommodating the additional students.

Officials said the investment would also contribute to expanding healthcare access in semi-urban and rural regions where the demand for trained doctors continues to rise.

More opportunities for MBBS aspirants

The increase in medical seats comes at a crucial time when competition for MBBS admissions remains extremely high across the country. Thousands of students from Karnataka appear for NEET every year, with many struggling to secure government medical seats due to limited availability.

With the addition of 1,122 seats, more students are expected to receive opportunities to pursue medical education within the state itself instead of seeking admissions elsewhere.

The move is also expected to reduce pressure on private medical colleges and improve accessibility for students from economically weaker backgrounds.

Medical education experts believe that strengthening state-run institutions can improve both affordability and the quality of healthcare services in the long term.

Focus on strengthening healthcare system

The Karnataka government said the decision would not only benefit students but also contribute towards improving the healthcare ecosystem in the state.

As India continues to face shortages of doctors and specialists in several regions, increasing the number of trained medical professionals has become a priority for both state and central governments.

The additional seats are expected to help produce more doctors, specialists and healthcare workers over the coming years, supporting hospitals and public healthcare systems across Karnataka and beyond.

Patil urged students to make full use of the opportunities now available in the state’s medical sector.

“Karnataka now offers abundant opportunities for those wishing to excel in the medical field, and students should make the best use of this,” the minister said.

The latest expansion further strengthens Karnataka’s position as one of India’s major hubs for medical education and healthcare training.
