MADIKERI: The education of students at Field Marshal KM Cariappa College (FMKMCC) in Madikeri is facing significant disruptions due to a shortage of funds and lack of permanent teaching staff. Parents are voicing their frustrations, but their pleas for intervention have not been addressed by the authorities.

FMKMCC, a government senior college previously affiliated with Mangaluru University, now operates only its Final Year Degree classes under the same university following the establishment of Kodagu University. The institution is grappling with the absence of permanent lecturers and unpaid salaries for guest lecturers, critically impacting the education of its Final Year students.

Jayanthi Rai, Vice-President of the Parents & Teachers Association at FMKMCC, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “Many subjects for final year students are not being taught due to the lack of lecturers. The education system has been disrupted previously due to a protest by guest lecturers over unpaid salaries. Now, with no lecturers to teach critical subjects, what options do final year students have?”

Rai further noted the challenges faced by students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who have already paid their fees but are not receiving the education they deserve. The college currently has 13 lecturer positions vacant, and 12 guest lecturers have not been compensated for months. This shortage is affecting subjects such as Computer Science and Journalism.

The university’s financial strain is also affecting basic management aspects of the institution, including the procurement of essential supplies. An interview has been scheduled for September 19 to address the vacant lecturer posts.
