Jalajakshi K D, 49, wears multiple hats at the Govt Upgraded Primary School in Kolchar, Sullia. Not only is she an assistant Kannada language teacher, but she also runs a menstrual hygiene campaign and drives the school’s minivan, ensuring safe transport for her students.

Earlier this year, the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC), with the help of donors, purchased a modified Maruti Omni named ‘Akshara Vahini’ to ease student commutes. Jalajakshi drives the van, covering 12 km and picking up students from five points. Despite charging a fee of Rs 700 per student, she contributes Rs 2,500 monthly towards the van’s maintenance.

The school’s student strength increased from 99 to 115 this year, with 17 pupils using the minivan. Jalajakshi’s efforts have not only improved commutes but have also earned the school the title of ‘Best Kannada Medium Govt Primary School.’ Plans are underway to expand transportation to more students in surrounding areas.

Her community contributions extend beyond transportation. She also initiated a campaign encouraging women in Aletty village to adopt menstrual cups, furthering her impact on local welfare.
