Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, celebrated its Annual College Day with a grand formal ceremony followed by a vibrant cultural showcase on campus. Mr Ivan D’Souza, Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, presided over the event.

Annual report and highlights
Principal Dr Rio D’Souza presented the annual report, outlining the institution’s achievements across academics, research, sports, and innovation. The event was convened by Dr Sunitha Guruprasad and Dr Swaraj Dominic Lewis.
Addressing the gathering, Rev. Fr Kenneth Rayner Crasta, Assistant Director, reflected on SJEC’s 23-year journey of growth and excellence, attributing its progress to collective effort and God’s blessings. He then introduced the Chief Guest.

Awards and recognition
The prize distribution ceremony saw Dr Sudheer M, Dean of Academic Affairs, announcing student achievers across academic categories. Distinguished faculty members were also honoured, with Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, inviting each awardee to the stage.


Dr Jyothi Damodar, Dean of Student Welfare, felicitated outstanding performers in sports, while winners of cultural competitions were also recognised during the event.
Chief Guest’s message: “Be employers, not employees”
In his inspiring address, Mr Ivan D’Souza shared his deep connection with SJEC, recalling past visits and his early years in student leadership. Encouraging students to dream big, he said:
“Engineering is a vast open book with endless opportunities. Aim to become employers rather than employees, and embrace the all-round development SJEC provides.”

He emphasised the importance of confidence, adaptability, and vision in today’s competitive world.

Presidential address and cultural showcase
In his presidential remarks, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza urged students to recognise their inner potential. Drawing inspiration from personalities such as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Elon Musk, and Mary Kom, he highlighted that excellence is rooted in discipline, consistency, and courage to think differently.
Dr Sunitha Guruprasad proposed the vote of thanks.
The formal programme was compered by Mr Jostel and Ms Prajwala, while the cultural segment—featuring singing, dance, and musical performances—was hosted by Abhinav R Bolar, Thrapthi B K, and Asher Pinto.

The celebration concluded on an uplifting note, reaffirming SJEC’s commitment to nurturing excellence, compassion, and holistic growth.
