Mangaluru: The Department of Commerce, School of Commerce, Finance and Accountancy, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), in association with the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), Nagpur, organised an online workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Patents and Design Filing” under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM).
The workshop was held at Eric Mathias Hall on the university campus and aimed to create awareness among students about intellectual property rights, innovation, and the importance of protecting original ideas.
Expert explains key aspects of intellectual property
The session was conducted by Dr. Bharath Suryavanshi, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs at RGNIIPM, Nagpur, who explained the fundamentals of intellectual property rights and their significance in fostering innovation.
He discussed various forms of intellectual property, including patents, design protection, trademarks, geographical indications, copyrights, and trade secrets, while outlining the legal safeguards available for protecting innovations.
Dr. Suryavanshi also highlighted common mistakes made by inventors and stressed the importance of securing intellectual property protection before publishing or publicly disclosing an invention.
Students encouraged to pursue innovation
Around 250 participants attended the workshop and gained insights into intellectual property filing procedures, patent registration, and design protection.
The programme encouraged students to explore opportunities in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship while understanding the role of intellectual property rights in safeguarding creative and technological advancements.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Caroleena Janefer and Dr. Bharathi R., Assistant Professors in the Department of Commerce, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University).
