Eighteen second-year students at Tripura Medical College have been charged with ragging following a complaint from the college principal, Dr. Arindam Dutta. The college authorities have imposed a one-year suspension from the hostel and a fine of ₹50,000 on each student involved.
An FIR was filed on October 25 under Section 4 of the Tripura Educational Institutions (Prevention of Ragging) Act, 1990. According to police officials, the students created a WhatsApp group where they allegedly threatened first-year students with various acts of ragging.
While no arrests have been made due to the maximum penalty for such offenses being four years, the police have issued notices for the students to appear for questioning, having already interrogated four of them.
In addition to the main fine, two of the accused students face an extra ₹25,000 penalty for allegedly abusing members of the NGO Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE), which was appointed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to investigate the ragging complaint. Another five second-year students have been fined an additional ₹10,000 for being repeat offenders in similar incidents.
The students have been instructed to pay their fines within ten days.
