The 16th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) began on a vibrant note on Thursday, with Bollywood actor Aamir Khan inaugurating the event. Staying true to Indian tradition on international soil, Khan lit the ceremonial lamp after removing his shoes, officially marking the start of the 11-day cultural and cinematic celebration.
The evening gained momentum as Khan introduced the Opening Night Film, Baksho Bondi, in the presence of its cast and crew, including acclaimed actors Tillotama Shome and Tanushree Das, who were warmly applauded by the packed audience.
“It is truly an honour to open the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. Cinema unites us, and I’m delighted to finally be here after hearing so much about this festival,” Khan said, extending his wishes to the team of Baksho Bondi and other participating films.
Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange hailed the inauguration as a landmark moment, noting that Baksho Bondi embodies the bold and moving storytelling the festival champions.
Running from August 14 to 24, IFFM 2025 will host screenings, masterclasses, and cultural showcases, further cementing its reputation as a premier platform for Indian and global cinema in Australia.
