According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the comedy drama Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan, made Rs 1.60 crore in India on its third Monday, its lowest haul since its December 21 release. Dunki’s total domestic receipts to date have reached Rs 218 cr. The Rajkumar Hirani-directed movie will now try to surpass Chennai Express, which took in Rs 227 crores in India. Dunki has made over Rs 445 cr in 19 days, surpassing the Rohit Shetty comedy’s global gross of Rs 422 cr.
Dunki is now trying to compete with Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 in terms of global collections. Released on Diwali, the third installment in the action franchise brought in a total of Rs 464 crore worldwide. Despite being projected as surefire short box office winners prior to release, both movies have underperformed at the box office. Dunki, on the other hand, cost a third of what Tiger 3, which is said to have cost Rs 300 crore, cost.
Dunki’s success comes despite mixed response from the audience, and a box office clash with Prabhas’ actioner Salaar, which has also put a good total globally. The legacy of Dunki, from trade perspective, will be that it became the first film in the comedy drama genre to get these numbers in the post-pandemic era. Previously, Aamir Khan had delivered a dud with Lal Singh Chaddha and Salman Khan fronted comedy Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan sank without a trace.
Dunki was Shah Rukh’s third release of the year, after blockbusters like Pathaan and Jawan, which made a combined global total of over Rs 2200 crore. He will be next seen in an extended appearance with daughter Suhana Khan in the action thriller The King.
