New Delhi: Renowned Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone has been appointed as the first-ever Mental Health Ambassador by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The announcement was made through the Ministry’s official social media handles on Friday, marking a major milestone in India’s mental health advocacy efforts.
Deepika expresses gratitude for the role
In her statement, Deepika said she was deeply honoured to take up the role and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting India’s ongoing initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She added that mental health remains a cause close to her heart and that she hopes to “bring visibility, compassion, and empathy” to the issue.
Strengthening India’s mental health framework
According to the Health Ministry, Deepika’s appointment aims to strengthen the nation’s mental health framework and build on the progress made in promoting mental well-being. The collaboration will focus on raising awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring better access to mental health resources across the country.
Deepika, who has been vocal about her own struggles with depression, has long been recognised as one of India’s leading advocates for mental wellness. Through her foundation, The Live Love Laugh Foundation, she has worked extensively on education, outreach, and community support initiatives for those affected by mental health challenges.
A new chapter in public health awareness
The Ministry called the partnership an “important step towards fostering an inclusive and supportive environment” for individuals dealing with mental health issues. Experts have welcomed the move, saying that having a public figure like Deepika lead the conversation could help normalise seeking help and inspire millions to prioritise mental well-being.
