New Delhi (India): Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-acclaimed film ‘Homebound’ has been officially selected as India’s entry for the 2026 Oscars, the Film Federation of India announced on Friday. The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, and has garnered critical acclaim on the global festival circuit.
Global festival success
‘Homebound’ premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation. The film also impressed audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025, where it earned the title of second runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award, accompanied by another standing ovation.
The film, backed by Dharma Productions, is inspired by The New York Times article “Taking Amrit Home.” It explores caste and religious biases in India, portraying the journey of two friends striving to build their lives despite societal obstacles. The climax highlights the migrant exodus during the COVID-19 lockdown, adding a contemporary and emotional dimension to the story.
