Kalki Koechlin opens up about her struggles post-DevD

Kalki Koechlin, known for her powerful debut in DevD, faced unexpected career challenges despite the film’s success. In a recent interview, the actress shared her struggles, revealing that she didn’t land another acting role for two years after the film’s release, despite receiving praise for her performance.

Speaking on After Hours with All About Eve, Kalki admitted that this period was a significant low in her career. “After DevD, I didn’t have another film for about two years. The next film was Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” she recalled. During this challenging phase, Kalki turned to theatre, even producing a play that won a Rs 1 lakh prize.

Living frugally, she survived on Vada Pao and commuted by local trains, a stark contrast to her public image. She shared that people often expressed surprise seeing her on public transport and questioned why she didn’t have a bodyguard. “People recognize me, and they’re familiar with my face, but they’re surprised to see me on public transport,” she said.

Reflecting on her growth during this period, Kalki mentioned that she has become more discerning about the roles she chooses. She also admitted that, at times, she accepted work purely for financial reasons, with some engagements feeling transactional.

Kalki’s journey underscores the unpredictable nature of the film industry and her resilience through challenging times.
