Thiruvananthapuram: Nationally acclaimed singer K S Chithra has faced backlash on social media following her recent video message encouraging people to recite Lord Ram hymns on January 22 during the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Within the past two days, a short video that went viral on social media platforms requested that everyone recite the mantra ‘Sri Rama, Jaya Rama, Jaya Jaya Rama’ at 12:20 pm, which is the time of the consecration ceremony.

To commemorate the event, she also asked that people light five-wick lamps in their homes that same day in the evening.

The 60-year-old singer concluded her message by reciting the Sanskrit hymn “Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu,” wishing that the Almighty’s blessings may be showered on everyone.

However, the video message from the singer didn’t go down well with a section of netizens who vehemently criticised her for the action.

Many felt that she took political sides by delivering such a message.

There were also many social media users who extended support to the singer, saying that she has every right and a freedom to express her opinion.

Singer G Venugopal, who strongly supported Chithra in the row, said the online remarks insulted and hurt her, which was disheartening.

He asked the detractors to forgive Chithra in a Facebook post if their opinions differed from hers.

Chithra was the target of a cyberattack shortly after actress Shobhana faced harsh criticism from some quarters for attending a BJP-organized event in Thrissur recently that featured her sharing the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chithra, who is well-known as Kerala’s “Vanambadi” (nightingale), has won numerous national and state honors and sung thousands of songs in a variety of languages.
