Shah Rukh Khan, who has experienced a phenomenal year with blockbusters like Jawan and Pathaan each surpassing Rs 1,000 crore worldwide, faces a different scenario with his latest release, Dunki. Despite the immense success of his earlier films, Dunki has failed to generate the same level of excitement since its release.

Dunki hit theaters on Thursday, securing an opening day box office collection of Rs 30 crore nett domestically, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. While this makes it the seventh-largest opener of the year after Jawan, Animal, Pathaan, Tiger 3, Gadar 2, and Adipurush, it falls short of the staggering figures achieved by Shah Rukh’s previous releases. For comparison, Jawan opened with Rs 75 crore, and even the underwhelming Adipurush managed Rs 36 crore on its opening day.

Despite being Shah Rukh Khan’s least successful film of the year, Dunki’s opening day figures still outshine those of other releases, including Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 15.81 crore), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Rs 15.73 crore), Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rs 11.1 crore), and Dream Girl 2 (Rs 10.69 crore).

On Thursday, Dunki recorded an overall occupancy of 29.94%, with the NCR region hosting 1412 shows and approximately 31% occupancy, while Mumbai featured 1081 shows with around 29.75% occupancy. However, Dunki faces tough competition as it goes head-to-head with Prashanth Neel’s Salaar on Friday, a multilingual release expected to surpass Rs 60 crore on its opening day.

Despite being Shah Rukh Khan’s least successful film this year, Dunki’s opening day figures surpass those of his 2018 release Zero, which opened with Rs 19.35 crore and accumulated Rs 90.28 crore during its lifetime.

For director Rajkumar Hirani, known for his box office successes, Dunki’s opening figures fall short of his last hit, 2018’s Sanju. The opening day collection for Sanju was Rs 34.75 crore, ultimately reaching a total of Rs 342.53 crore during its theatrical run. Starring Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Dunki enters the competitive box office arena following the remarkable success of Animal.
