Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji’s Saathiya is set to mark its 22nd anniversary on December 20. A landmark film in Indian cinema, Saathiya continues to be celebrated for its heartfelt storytelling, the lead pair’s chemistry, and AR Rahman’s timeless music. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Vivek Oberoi shared his journey with the film, revealing that initially, he wasn’t prepared to take it on and faced skepticism for doing so.
From ‘Company’ to ‘Saathiya’: A Leap of Faith
Vivek recounted how he was shooting for his debut film Company, an intense gangster drama, when his childhood friend and Saathiya director, Shaad Ali, approached him. Vivek recalled:
“Shaad asked me to watch the Tamil film ‘Alai Payuthey,’ directed by Mani Ratnam. At first, I was reluctant because I was immersed in the gangster persona for Company. But when I finally watched it, the film moved me to tears. It was impossible to say no after that.”
Despite his emotional connection to the story, Vivek faced resistance from industry insiders. Company was a big-budget action film that positioned him as a rising star, and many saw Saathiya, a modestly scaled romantic drama, as a step down.
“People told me I was making a mistake. They said, ‘You’re being launched in a massive film like Company; why would you choose a small love story next?’ But the actor in me couldn’t let go of the opportunity to explore a role like Aditya,” Vivek shared.
A Film That Defied Expectations
Against all odds, Saathiya became a critical and commercial success. Its relatable love story, nuanced performances, and soul-stirring music struck a chord with audiences, proving skeptics wrong. Vivek fondly reflected on the journey:
“The buzz around Company was huge, and people expected me to follow it up with another action film. Instead, I did Saathiya—and it became the magical film it is today.”
The Legacy of Saathiya
As Saathiya turns 22, it remains a cornerstone of Vivek Oberoi’s career and a beloved classic in Indian cinema. The film’s enduring appeal lies not just in its story but in its heartfelt performances, making it a defining chapter in Vivek’s journey.
“Looking back, I’m grateful I trusted my instincts. Saathiya wasn’t just a film; it was an emotional experience that I’ll always cherish,” he concluded with a smile.
This anniversary serves as a reminder of how storytelling, when rooted in authenticity, can transcend time and remain etched in the hearts of audiences.
