Guwahati: Assam’s celebrated singer Zubeen Garg was cremated on Tuesday at Kamarkuchi crematorium, leaving fans and the music fraternity in deep grief. The emotional ceremony saw his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, inconsolable as she bid farewell to her husband.

Thousands of fans, well-wishers, and dignitaries attended the funeral, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju, among other political figures. The Assam Police honoured the singer with a ceremonial gun salute, reflecting his immense contribution to Assamese music and culture. His sister, Palme Borthakur, along with close associates, performed the final rites.

In a moving tribute, a branch of the sandalwood tree that Zubeen had planted on his birthday in 2017 was placed on the pyre. Mourners also chanted his iconic song “Mayabini Ratir Buku” during the cremation rituals, highlighting the deep connection he had with his fans.

Ahead of the funeral, Garima brought the couple’s four dogs to the coffin for a final farewell, demonstrating the profound bond Zubeen shared with his pets. Many fans took to social media to express their grief and pay homage to the singer, celebrating his legacy as one of Assam’s most beloved musical icons.

The ceremony not only reflected the personal loss of his family but also marked a collective mourning across Assam and the wider music community.
