The Central Teacher Eligibility Test, popularly known as CTET, is a national-level examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. The CTET exam is held twice a year, one in July and another in December. CTET is a mandatory requirement for all candidates who want to become a teacher for classes I to VIII in government schools across the whole country.

The CTET syllabus is very vast and covers a holistic range of topics related to teaching and education. CTET exam is divided into two papers: Paper I and Paper II. Paper I is for those candidates who want to teach classes I to V, while Paper II is for those candidates who want to teach classes VI to VIII.

The syllabus for both papers is very similar in some areas, yet differs in others.

Paper I Syllabus:

  1. Child Development and Pedagogy: This section of the syllabus is very important as it covers topics related to child development, such as understanding children’s needs, learning styles, and teaching methods that can be used to support children’s growth and development.
  2. Language I: This section tests candidates on their proficiency in the language of instruction (either English or Hindi). The focus of this section is on language comprehension, grammar, and verbal communication.
  3. Language II: This section specifically tests the candidate’s knowledge of a second language, which can be either English or Hindi. The emphasis is laid on language comprehension, grammar, and verbal communication.
  4. Mathematics: It covers topics related to mathematics, such as number systems, geometry, algebra, and data handling. The greater emphasis is laid on problem-solving and the application of various mathematical concepts.
  5. Environmental Studies: This section specifically covers topics related to the environment, such as environmental education, natural resources, and conservation. It promotes awareness and understanding of environmental issues.

Paper II Syllabus:

  1. Child Development and Pedagogy: This section is again very similar to the corresponding section in Paper I, but it lays focus on child development for older children.
  2. Language I: This section is again very similar to the corresponding section in Paper I but with comparatively greater emphasis on language skills and proficiency.
  3. Language II: This section is also very similar to the corresponding section in Paper I, but again with a greater emphasis on language skills and proficiency.
  4. Mathematics and Science: This section covers a wide range of topics related to mathematics and science, including number systems, algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, and biology. The emphasis is laid on problem-solving and the application of various scientific concepts.
  5. Social Studies/Social Sciences: This section of the paper covers topics related to social studies and social sciences, such as history, geography, political science, and economics. The emphasis is laid on promoting awareness and understanding of social issues.

In addition to these subjects, the CTET syllabus also includes within its ambit a section on teaching methodology, which covers topics related to teaching strategies, classroom management, and assessment techniques.

Preparing for this CTET exam and clearing CTET cut off is a daunting task, given the vastness of the syllabus. However, with the help of proper planning and consistent effort, it is very much possible to crack the exam.
