Mangaluru: The Department of Respiratory Therapy at Manipal College of Health Professions (MCHP), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) proudly celebrated World Lung Day 2023 with a series of events aimed at raising awareness about lung health and respiratory care.
The inauguration took place on Sep 22, 2023, featuring esteemed guests Dr Sharath Rao, Pro VC- Health Science, MAHE, Manipal, as the Chief Guest; and Dr Manu Mohan K, Professor and designate Head, Respiratory Medicine, KMC, Manipal, as the Guest of Honor.
Dr G Arun Maiya, Dean, MCHP, extended a warm welcome to dignitaries and the event’s enthusiastic attendees. The event’s program overview was presented by Pratibha Todur, Incharge Head, the Department of Respiratory Therapy. Dr Sharath Rao addressed the audience, emphasizing the urgent need for respiratory care to combat chronic lung diseases in the country. Dr Manu Mohan highlighted the crucial role of Respiratory Therapists in delivering care to patients with lung diseases and promoting healthy lungs.
Following the inauguration, a Continuous Medical Education session featured renowned speakers who shared valuable insights Basics of Spirometry – Binoy K, Respiratory Therapist, KIMS, Trivandrum, Pitfalls during Spirometry – Dr Manu Mohan, Professor, Respiratory Medicine, KMC, Manipal, Preventing Lung Injury in Neonates – Dr Leslie Lewis, Professor and Head, Pediatrics, KMC and Personalized Mechanical Ventilation – Dr Sunil R, Associate Professor, Critical Care Medicine, KMC.
As part of the World Lung Day Celebration, the department organized a webinar on Sep 23, 2023, featuring seven accomplished alumni from across the globe. These alumni provided valuable career perspectives to aspiring Respiratory Therapists from the department. The celebration was not limited to academic pursuits; it also aimed to enrich the students’ lives through various curricular and extracurricular activities.
These included mime performances, painting and cartooning competitions, poster presentations, quizzes, the installation of a 3D model, and creative reels all centred around the theme, “Access to Prevention and Treatment for All. Leave No One Behind.” Cultural events, including singing and dance competitions, added a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere.
The grand finale of the celebration took place on September 23. Dr Mallikarjuna Rao, Principal of MCOPS, MAHE, Manipal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. This event was featured with a prize distribution ceremony, followed by the valedictory function, marking the conclusion of this inspiring and talent-packed celebration.
