Manipal: The second international conference of Global Cancer Consortium was conducted jointly by Kasturba Medical College Manipal, Global cancer consortium and Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre on Jan 7 and 8, 2023 at Fortune Inn Valley View, Manipal. More than 200 delegates and faculty members participated in this conference, who were mainly from various oncology disciplines across India. The international faculty from Markey Cancer Centre, Mayo Clinic, Lahey Hospital & Medical Centre, and University of Alabama participated as resource persons. The theme of the conference is ‘Futuristic Oncology- Precision medicine in breast, liver, and lung cancer’. The conference focussed on treatment advancements in breast, lung and liver cancer.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr Sushma Bhatnagar, Director, National Cancer Institute, Government of India and Director, Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi. Dr Vivek Rangnekar, Professor, Associate Director of Transdisciplinary Collaboration, Markey Cancer Center, University of Kentucky, USA and Dr Sharath K Rao, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Health sciences, MAHE, Manipal were Guests of Honor for the program. Dr H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal presided over the program. Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Dean, KMC Manipal welcomed the gathering and Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal proposed a vote of thanks.
On this occasion, Dr Vivek Rangnekar gave an overview of the Consortium and its activities and the importance of organising an international conference of the Global Cancer Consortium.
Dr Sharath K Rao said, “each patient will have a different treatment which is what is called precision cancer treatment. Involvement of pharmacogenetics, and medical genetics is important because genes have to be identified, then produce the growth we have to be identified to give the best treatment. Manipal has all these facilities for all this and our aim is to provide precision medicine”.
Dr Karthik Udupa – Head, Medical Oncology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Conference Chairperson gave an overview of this conference. Dr Ananth Pai- organising secretary; and Dr Shirley Lewis -scientific chairperson were present during the inaugural function. Dr KrIthika Rao was the Master of ceremonies for the program.
