Mangaluru: The Centre for Social Concern, St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru conducted an awareness programme for the general public on “Solid Waste Management” at the Kambla ward in Mangaluru on February 17.
Around 90 students from the departments of Business Management, English and Computer Animation participated in this programme. The Centre for Social Concern Coordinator Sharon, along with Sri Nidhi, Junior Health Inspector of the ward, took the initiative of organising this programme.
The students were guided by Severine Pinto, Charithra, Divya Rao and Santhosh Notagar, faculty of the college. The students along with the staff members visited around 100 houses in the community and spoke to people regarding the importance of managing household waste effectively. Multipurpose workers from MCC, Sudha and Sahana also took the initiative of leading the students to various houses in the community.
The students emphasised the need to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle waste. They were engaged in this session from 2 PM to 5 PM and were accepted warmly by the people as they shared their worries and difficulties in managing waste, with the students.
Before this session, students visited the Pachanady dumping yard and Vermicomposting plant and studied the waste disposal procedure of the MCC. They were trained with a module of “Problems and need for solid waste management” in the college by the Centre for Social Concern staff members.
The Centre for Social Concern is a department of St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, which works with the people on various social issues.
