Mangaluru: Spearhead Academy, A centre for Media Studies, a unit of Village TV (R.), hosted the third episode of the monthly webinar series, ‘Straight from the Journalist’. The webinar took place on Feb 22, 2022, at 7 pm. Spearhead Academy a budding centre for media studies is ever committed to the knowledge-sharing activity on the  most relevant need of the market in media.  Harshakumar Kugwe was the eminent resource person of the day. Kugwe is a well-known journalist, who is the current editor of Peepal Media, an established online media portal of Karnataka.

Harshakumar Kugwe is known for his research works especially on the tribes of Karnataka. He has authored several books, ‘Mang Garudi’ and ‘Desha Andre Manushyaru’ to name a couple. Since this is an era of social media, he chose ‘social media: Opportunities and Challenges’ as the topic of discussion.

Speaking on the topic Kugwe said, that social media has ample opportunities for all who want to be a journalist or make any business for that matter. Today in the market digitalised products find more value than otherwise. All established media houses do have strong social media platforms because that looks to be the future of the entire communication world itself. But there is an equal number of positives and negatives. In his talk, he highlighted both opportunities and challenges. In opportunities, he said that social media has a huge platform of possibilities in different genres, like sports, news, food, entertainment, and anything. One need not have a special qualification to do business, but talent is enough. In fact, he listed several possibilities. At the same time, there are also negatives, like people being very selective in content, therefore, good research is needed before starting anything on social media. Also like any other business, this also needs basic investment and many more.

The webinar was well attended, with more than 60 participants. There were participants from all over the state irrespective of age and experience. It will be wrong not to mention the gathering was such a high-quality one with several Scholars, doctors, writers, activists, professors and students. There were several questions asked by the involved participants, to which the resource person answered with at most precision and accuracy. In fact, the questions asked were most relevant and triggered by the talk given by the resource person.

The host expressed gratitude to the august gathering, particularly to the resource persons of the day, foremen of the Village TV Trust (R.) Mangaluru, and all the participants. A special mention was made to priests, scholars, professors, and doctors to acknowledge the presence. The academy will continue with more of its kind.

Roshan Honest Raj, Vice Principal, Spearhead Academy was the host of the day who welcomed the guests of the day very warmly to spearhead Academy, especially for the webinar. The resource person also was introduced to the nucleus by him. The webinar was brought to its conclusion with an end note and vote of thanks by the host.
