Shankerpura/Pangla: ICYM Pangla unit successfully organized inter-parish diocesan level Konkani singing competition for the 13th year at Sabha Bhavan of St John the Evangelist Church Pangla, on Sunday, October 30. In the overall points secured, Mother of Sorrows Church Udupi bagged the Championship trophy followed by Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva and St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala.
The competition began sharp at 2pm as planned with a prayer song by Pangla church choir. Oliver D’Sa, President, ICYM accorded a warm welcome to judges of the day Fr Ronald Serrao, Professor, Jeppu Seminary, Drummer Sachin Sequiera, and Singer Prem Lobo and other honorary guests present on the occasion and invited them to the dais for the inaugural function. He also welcomed all the participants present for the competition.
Rev. Fr Leslie D’Souza, parish priest, St John Evangelist Church, inaugurated the competitions by lighting the lamp accompanied by all the guests on the dais. In his inaugural speech he wished all the participants from various parishes of the diocese. In his inaugural speech he said that the judges invited for the competition are prominent musicians and well known personalities in the music world from Mangalore diocese. All singers will get fair judgement and anyone can win the prizes based on their performances. He wished all the participants good luck.

Fr Mahesh D’Souza; Fr Vincent Coelho, Principal,St John PU College; Judges Olivera D’Sa, president ICYM, Pangla unit; Jeevan Pereira, Secretary(ICYM) and Clara Mendonca (ICYM Animator) were present in the inaugural function.

The singing competition was held for seven categories i.e. boys below 15 years (10 Participants) and girls below 15 years (15 Participants), Group below 15 years (7 groups), Men (14 participants), Women (17 participants), Duet (Male/Female – 11 participants) and Adult Group (8 groups). All the singers performed very well and judges had a tough time to judge them. The audience enjoyed the performances of the participants, children and adults alike as it was a treat to the soul to enjoy good singing.
Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Diocese of Udupi presided over the valedictory and prize distribution programme. Fr Leslie D’Souza, Fr Edwin D’Souza, director, ICYM, diocese of Udupi, Mark Vaz, Seema D’Souza, Fr Vincent Coelho, Fr Ronald Seraro, Sachin Sequiera, Prem Lobo, Olivera D’Sa, Jeevan Pereira, Clara Mendonca and Alphonse Mendonca were present at the valedictory ceremony.
Oliver D’Sa accorded a warm welcome to Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo (Bishop) and all the honorary guests present on the dais.
Alphonse Mendonca (Animator, ICYM Pangla) introduced the judges of the competitions to the audience.
In his presidential speech, Bishop of Udupi Dr Gerald Lobo said, “No one is interested to listen to the speeches. Everyone is anxious to know the results. However I will take only a few minutes. First of all on behalf of Udupi Diocese, I thank the director of Pangla ICYM unit, Fr. Leslie D’Souza, its members and animators for successfully conducting today’s singing competition. Konkani is our mother tongue and hence a lot of work needs to be done on the development of our language. Holding singing competition is one such programme to carry forward our language and culture to the next generation. He further said, “There are talented persons in diverse fields in this diocese. ICYM Pangla unit is doing a wonderful job in organizing the singing competition successfully for the 13th year and they have given platform to showcase the talents of singers and artists. The strength of the competition is increasing year after year. I congratulate the ICYM unit for their commendable efforts in organizing this big event. I am glad to note that singers from many parishes have been enthusiastically taking part in the completions year after year”. Bishop Gerald Lobo suggested holding the singing competition in Udupi from next year since it is diocesan level and it would be very convenient for all the parishioners of Udupi Diocese to participate as Udupi Town is the center of the diocese. He requested ICYM Pangla to seriously take note of this and if possible to hold this competition in Udupi from next year.
Fr Leslie D’Souza thanked the ICYM unit for its successful organization. He also thanked the parishioners for their support towards the same. He also said that judges have done a great job and thanked them for judging the competitions.
In total 23 parishes from the diocese took part in the competitions held for the 13th year by ICYM Unit Pangla.
Olivera D’Sa welcomed the guests. Joyson D’Sa, President, ICYM Shirva Deanery proposed the vote of thanks. Jeevan Pereira compered the valedictory Function. Rolson Fernandes, PRO of the Unit read out the winners’ names.
