Mangaluru: In Olavina Halli on 26 Jan, a significant event occurred when the community laid the foundation stone for a new shelter for destitute women. The ceremony, which initiated the construction of the facility, commenced with a Eucharistic celebration, followed by a blessing ceremony, and concluded with the official laying of the foundation stone.

Provincial Superior Sr Irene Menezes, along with Italian friends, local well-wishers, parishioners, and community members, attended the event. Rev Fr Victor D’mello, accompanied by Rev Fr Stany Monteiro, led the ceremony with a prayer and blessings, emphasizing the importance of compassion and care for the destitute.

Following this, Sr Irene Menezes highlighted the need for the facility, stressing the significance of supporting vulnerable women in society. She urged people to generously donate to ensure the timely completion of the project.

The laying of the foundation stone marked the official start of the shelter’s construction, reflecting a commitment from the province to provide a safe and supportive environment for destitute women. The event concluded with a commitment to offering essential services and resources. This marked a significant step forward in addressing the needs of destitute women in the Mangalore community, showcasing the community’s dedication to inclusivity and compassion.

Italian missionary Sr Amelia Cimolino had initiated the Olavina Halli mission in 1974, 50 years ago, for the rehabilitation of leprosy-affected and cured individuals.
