Mangaluru: World Breastfeeding week was inaugurated at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital of Yenepoya University at Deralakatte on August 1, 2016. Dr. Mohammed Amin Wani, Chief Operating Officer of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital inaugurated the programme.
Wani in his inaugural address, emphasized the benefits of breastfeeding and urged the mothers to act as ambassadors in their own villages in creating awareness on breastfeeding. Dr. Asha P Shetty, Principal of Yenepoya Nursing College also spoke. Mother Craft, a joint initiative coordinated by the Department of Community Medicine together with Departments of Pediatrics and OBG to educate antenatal and post natal mothers on hygiene, immunization, nutrition, breastfeeding and related aspects was also inaugurated during the occasion. Dr Abhaya Nirgude, Professor and HOD of Community Medicine gave a note on the activities conducted through mother craft.
Dr. Prakash Saldanha, Professor and HOD Paediatrics; Dr Anitha Prabhu, Professor, Department of Paediatrics; Dr Madhavi, Asst. professor of Community Medicine and Bhanumathy, Nursing Superintendent were present on the dais.
Dr. Mohammed Guthigar, HOD MSW welcomed and Dr. Anitha Prabhu, Professor, Pediatrics Department proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was jointly organized by the departments of Pediatrics, OBG, MSW, Hospital Administration and Yenepoya Nursing College.
As part of the breastfeeding week, a weeklong health education program will be conducted for ante natal and post natal mothers, non teaching staff of the hospital and for women in community.
