As India’s gig economy expands at a rapid pace, millions of workers dependent on short-term and flexible jobs are looking to Budget 2026 for stronger income protection and financial stability. Climate shocks expose fragile livelihoods
Extreme weather events have emerged as a major threat to gig workers whose earnings depend on daily mobility and outdoor activity. Floods, heatwaves and transport disruptions can instantly halt income, often without any immediate safety net.
Ankur Indrakush, Founder and Managing Director of Plutas.AI, says policy must urgently adapt to India’s changing climate realities. He notes that existing insurance schemes largely focus on compensation after losses occur, rather than protecting livelihoods at the moment income stops.
He argues that pre-funded parametric climate insurance—triggered automatically by objective weather data—could enable faster payouts with fewer delays. With India’s gig workforce projected to grow significantly by 2047, such models could cushion income losses during floods, heatwaves and climate-linked shutdowns.
Young gig workers seek financial flexibility
Beyond climate risks, younger gig workers are asking for measures that allow them to invest in skills and career growth despite irregular incomes. Abhimanyu Saxena, Co-founder of Scaler, believes Budget 2026 should prioritise tax relief for young earners and easier access to education financing.
He says greater financial flexibility would help young professionals upskill confidently, supporting India’s long-term demographic and economic advantage.
Responsible digital credit in focus
As gig workers increasingly rely on digital loans, consumer protection has become another key concern. Shruti Aggarwal, Co-founder of Stashfin, stresses the need for clear disclosures, grievance redressal and responsible lending practices across fintech platforms.
Together, these expectations signal a clear shift—from temporary relief to systems that help gig workers withstand shocks in real time. Budget 2026 could be pivotal in shaping a more secure future for India’s flexible workforce.
