New Delhi: Elon Musk has officially launched X Money, taking a major step towards transforming X into the “everything app” he has long envisioned. The new digital payments service enables eligible users to send money, receive payments, pay bills and manage everyday financial transactions directly within the X app, expanding the platform beyond social networking into financial services.

The rollout has begun for Premium and Premium+ subscribers in the United States, following an invite-only beta phase. X Money is currently available across most US states and is expected to expand gradually.

What is X Money?

X Money is a digital banking and payments platform integrated into the X app.

Eligible users receive a deposit account backed by Cross River Bank, allowing them to receive payments, transfer money to other X users, pay bills, send wire transfers and even deposit physical cheques without leaving the application. The move marks X’s biggest expansion into financial services since Elon Musk acquired the platform.

Visa debit card and digital wallet

Every eligible X Money user receives a virtual Visa debit card, which can be used with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Users also have the option to order a physical metal Visa card. According to X, the card offers 3% cashback on eligible purchases, carries no foreign transaction fees, and is accepted wherever Visa cards are supported.

Banking features inside X

X Money brings several banking features directly into the social media platform, including:

  • Peer-to-peer money transfers
  • Bill payments
  • Direct deposits
  • Wire transfers
  • Physical cheque deposits
  • Fee-free ATM withdrawals (for eligible users)
  • Early access to paycheques
  • High-yield deposit accounts for qualifying users

The aim is to let users complete everyday financial transactions without switching to separate banking or payment apps.

Available only in the US for now

At present, X Money is limited to Premium and Premium+ subscribers in the United States.

The company has not announced a timeline for international expansion, though industry observers expect additional markets to be added after regulatory approvals.

Musk’s ‘everything app’ vision

Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Elon Musk has repeatedly stated his ambition to build an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat.

The launch of X Money represents a significant milestone in that strategy by combining social networking with digital payments and financial services. Future plans are expected to include broader financial products and deeper creator monetisation tools.

Competition in the digital payments market

With X Money, the platform enters a competitive payments ecosystem currently dominated by services such as Venmo, Cash App, Zelle and traditional banking apps.

Its biggest differentiator is the integration of financial services within a social media platform, allowing users to communicate and transact without leaving the app.

Conclusion

The rollout of X Money marks one of Elon Musk’s most ambitious moves since acquiring X. By combining payments, banking and social networking in a single platform, the company is taking a significant step towards creating an all-in-one digital ecosystem. While currently limited to US Premium subscribers, the launch could reshape how users interact with financial services if the platform expands globally.
